Women of the Word Bible Quilt® Journal: Tamar

Updated: Oct 30

Further into 2 Samuel, we learn more about David's complicated family life. He had multiple wives and concubines, which resulted in quite a few offspring who had their own complex relationships.

Tamar is the beautiful daughter of David, who wears a long-sleeved robe signifying her role as a virgin daughter of the king.

Tamar has a full brother named Absalom. He is described as being handsome and highly praised "from the sole of his foot to the top of his head, he did not have a single flaw."

Absalom becomes a safe haven for Tamar when she's sexually assaulted by her paternal half-brother, Amnon.

Although David is angered when he learns of the incident, he appears to do nothing on Tamar's behalf. Perhaps this is because of Amnon being the heir apparent? Maybe David feels guilty because he was manipulated by Amnon and was the one who sent Tamar to Amnon's house when Amnon feigned illness?

Meanwhile Absalom shelters Tamar in his home, offering a refuge in her time of disgrace. He bides his time, awaiting an opportunity to avenge Tamar's honor. Two years later Absalom schemes to have Amnon assassinated and flees to Geshur. Estranged from David, the remainder of Absalom's story is dramatic and his life ends in a unique way. Keep reading!

Since I had floral washi tape at the top of the page, I stamped some simple leaves to help balance out the spacing. I chose to leave space in the title circle to capture characteristics of Tamar as a final touch when I make sure I've covered enough resources on her.

I've got her page with its corresponding tab tucked back into my Women of the Word BQ Journal, a disc-bound system that's developing over time.
