Naomi's other daughter-in-law was Orpah. Like Ruth, she also experienced the grief of her husband and father-in-law. She also was in a vulnerable position as a widow.
When Naomi released her daughters-in-law to return to their own families and to stay in their homeland, Orpah initially insisted on remaining with Naomi. When Naomi persisted in offering them a fresh start and the potential of a new husband, Orpah returned to "her people and to her gods."

We don't know much more about Orpah, but I decided to include her in my Women of the Word BQJ because her story offers a contrast to Ruth's story. Both of these women experienced similar circumstances and both were in mourning, yet they made different decisions. We know that Ruth's tragedy unfolded into a beautiful love story which intertwines with the lineage of King David. We don't know how Orpah's story ended.

I did this summary page on Orpah on the backside of Naomi's story, using a freestyle Bible Quilting technique. As I did the scripture writing, I added stitchlines and strips of washi tape to block out sections of the text. I punched the page to insert into my Women of the Word BQ Journal.
