Women of the Word Bible Quilt® Journal: Bathsheba

Updated: Oct 30

As we read into 2 Samuel, we encounter the story of David and Bathsheba.

This is another saga of man's vulnerability to attractive women, showing a cascading sequence of events as he struggles with a cycle of sinful decisions.

Since the context includes a lot of critical background information, I chose to print out the passage so that I could highlight and identify repetitive themes.

On the back side of the printed page, I wrote notes about the key characters, changing colors to differentiate between them.

I ran out of room to go more in-depth on Bathsheba's role later on. I decided to add a quilt square to prompt me to look into ! Kings to expand her story onto another page when I come back to her in the future.

I inserted this page with its corresponding tab into my Women of the Word BQ Journal, a disc-bound system that allows me to move pages around as needed.

Bathsheba's story includes dramatic moments of adultery, conspiracy, and a conniving scheme resulting in death by military action. She suffers betrayal and loss amidst becoming a wife to a king and, ultimately, the mother of Solomon.

It's interesting that in the lineage of Jesus (Matthew 1:6), she is referred to as Solomon's mother and Uriah's wife but not mentioned by name or as wife to David.

Once again I'm reminded that these women are not one-dimensional characters. Their histories are complicated, reflecting both strengths and flaws. Let's continue to look for God's provision and purpose in these complex narratives.
