Deuteronomy, the 5th book of the Old Testament, is the final part of the Pentateuch. With 34 chapters, its name means "second law" or "repetition of the law."
It includes the Shema, an important daily prayer about obedience and devotion to one God. It contains Moses' final speech to the Israelites on the plains of Moab, shortly before they enter the Promised Land.
Moses reminds the Israelites that they were the Lord's chosen people, His treasured possession. He exhorts them to follow the law. He tells them about blessings for those who keep the law and curses for those who break it.
He reviews their history of disobedience, yet also emphasizes God's enduring faithfulness.
"What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to Him?" Deuteronomy 4:7
Bible Quilting Deuteronomy
I started my BQJ page on Deuteronomy by adding a label title on top of a strip of washi, gradually writing scripture down the left side of the page then starting again at the top.

I drew a heart shape to highlight a key verse. I left a circle open to come back later with data re: characters, themes, dates, etc. Then I shaded some of the background.

I changed the color of the pen I was using to help visually shift between passages. Sometimes I added a strip of washi to break up the writing. I used my small ruler to draw stitch lines into quilt blocks.

This is a lot of information to compress onto a page. As you can see, I kept it pretty simple ad focused on the scripture writing itself. Another layer of embellishment can always be incorporated in later.
"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts." Deuteronomy 6:6
Throughout Deuteronomy, Moses calls the people to covenant faithfulness. Despite his powerful leadership and unique personal relationship with the Lord, Moses himself was not allowed to enter it due to his own disobedience. He peacefully passed the mantle of leadership on to Joshua before his death.
"never again did there arise in Israel a prophet like Moses." Deuteronomy 34:10-12
You may want to study characters, such as Moses and Joshua, more in depth and create separate BQ pages on them.
In the meantime it may be helpful to jot down notes on flip cards to refer to later.
"Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you." Deuteronomy 6:3
The end of Deuteronomy is a bit of a cliffhanger as the Israelites' journey into the promised land awaits and they've transitioned to a new leader.
Throughout your exploration of Deuteronomy, you may encounter verses that you'd like to add to your ABC Journal. You can simply add the keyword and reference to your ABC flip cards or may want to immediately add that verse onto the specific letter page as you go.
As we continue to engage with Scripture in a variety of ways, this reinforces our learning and helps us make connections between history lessons that have application for our present day experiences.
Join us TOMORROW for a Zoom Chat. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and share your ideas for this project!
