I've been reviewing some of my past #biblequiltjournal pages and thought I'd share this one from January several years ago. It captures a lot of the New Year/January vibes.
I hope it's an encouragement to you and whatever FRESH START you're undertaking during this season!
It's been a while since I shared any of my sermon notes. Our pastor is doing a series on the minor prophets, so I added a tab to make a section in my BQ journal.
This is all I take with me to chuch: my BQ Notes Journal and a pen pouch:
Sometimes I prep the page a bit before the service, but most of the time I do the whole page at church. I try to add a few embellishments later on, but this doesn't always happen.
Recently we had a women's event that was basically a potluck with the theme "Taste & See..."
"Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him." Psalm 34:8
Before the event I created this BQJ page, using a colorful photo of a charcuterie spread from our son's engagement party a few years ago. I pulled out all the food-related washi tape I had to make a colorful border around the page.
I simply incorporated it as part of table decor as a reminder for the focus of our event.
How might YOU use a BQJ illustration to infuse scripture
Did you get a chance to watch the replay of our last Zoom session? Among other Christmas-y things we discussed, I showed how to make a washi tape Christmas tree.
I thought I'd show how I finished off the page after the video.
Since the tree was such a large element already, I decided to write out a single verse.
I cut an ornament design out of a greeting card for the tab, then added some fun stickers to balance out the page, leaving white space to focus on the verse.
This was one of my original pages on Wisdom. It was left blank for quite a while before I finished it.
I think that this is a good reminder...we are unfinished, too. We continue to have life experiences in which, hopefully, we are gaining wisdom and discernment. It's okay to stop and process during difficult situations, taking a moment to glean wisdom and direction in the midst of uncertainty.

You can dive into whole passages on wisdom, especially in Proverbs.
"Devote your heart and soul to seeking the Lord your God." I Chronicles 22:19
I started this page a couple years ago and finally finished the spread today.
I tend to use this time between Christmas and New Year's to finish up pages or complete a Bible Quilt that's been in progress a while. Guess it's a way of tying up loose ends and preparing for the new year...
SOUL 2-page spread in my Bible Quilt journal
How do you prepare your heart & soul for the beginning of a New Year?
Someone shared with me how they were Bible Quilting a Women's Retreat notes and it made me realize that by Bible Quilting sermon notes or Bible Study notes would help me meditate on God's word more thoroughly. The attached picture is the notes from a recent sermon at our church and also made me think of new friends I've made through Bible Quilting.
I've been thinking as I read through these that this method could be great for any type of notes -- not necessarily just spiritual things.I'm SO not artsy; I think in words, not pictures. So when I was reading something about Mind Mapping a number of years ago, they said it's important to use colors and images when mapping because it helps with recall...but I tried it, and I found that if I gave myself five minutes to Mind Map whatever my topic was at the time (I forget now what it was), I got one thing on the page -- and I froze up and spent the entire rest of the time trying to figure out what to draw. 😂 If I gave myself another five minutes and just wrote words, I ended up with a whole pageful. One of the amazing things about your method is that it lets you start by just doing the writing, in as linear a fashion as necessary, keeping the decorating a separate step. That means you get to add all the color and embellishments that add that visual-recall aspect (and also make it just plain pretty!) but aren't bogged down trying to do it from the beginning. It's kind of like not trying to write and edit all in one pass.
I started from the center and worked outward, using only key words or short phrases.
We all have hard days that we just really need to claim the promises God as given us as one of His children. This "I am" page is one that I have treasured, turning to it over and over again to remind myself of these precious attributes we share in Christ.
I could have colored the background in, but I went with the simplicity of the pastel look.
It took me two years to finish my original Bible Quilt journal. I had "the end" on my mind, so that's how I came up with this theme (I think).
The photo quality is not great...and this was before I had discovered Papermate Flair pens, so it's just a couple G-2 pens. Sometimes simplicity reminds us just to focus on the weight of the message we're writing!

Leaves are so friendly to incorporate on a BQ page, don't you think? I used some stamps for the falling leaves and traced a leaf-shaped cookie cutter to highlight a verse.
There's a lot of fun fall-inspired washi tape out there! And, a fellow Bible Quilter shared some vibrant leaf stickers with us...
2) obtaining spiritual direction and understanding
Discernment page in my Bible Quilt journal
Discernment is about being open to direction, accepting guidance and following wise principles. The Lord provides us with His commandments as protocols to adhere to in our daily living.
If you like to follow along with 30-day, 40-day or even 100-day series on social media, you can find them on a variety of topics and get a verse a day fed into your feed.
These pages were from a "100 Days of Jesus" series I followed a couple years ago. I knew it would be at least a 2-page spread and that I would mainly focus on the name title and reference rather than writing a full verse.
Names of Jesus, page 1, in my Bible Quilt Journal
I opted to alternate adding a name on each page so that I would have a mix of alphabet verses on each side. When I prop it on a counter, I've got a variety of letters represented on both sides.
Names of Jesus, page 2, in my Bible Quilt Journal
I had stickers for several of the names, so I incorporated these wherever I could to help save space and to add variety.
Adorable! 🙌 I’d say your “Travel BQ” game is strong, my friend! Thanks for sharing! 😊
