Hymns & Music Station for BQJ Workshop

One of the stations I often have set up for BQ Workshops is one with old hymnals and music embellishments.

Hymn/Music station at Bible Quilting Workshop

These old hymns have a way of tugging at our hearts, perhaps awakening childhood memories of songs we sung at VBS, Sunday School, or even Christmas programs.

I love the texture these vintage pages add to my BQ pages. I simply adhere it to the page with a glue stick, then reinforce some of the edges with washi tape.

Embellishing a hymn on a Bible Quilt Journal page

I search for scriptures that highlight the phrases that impact me the most from the hymn, adding stitch lines and embellishments around it.

Glory & Peace

I'm capturing a couple of our 31 Days of Peace verses on the blank pages at the back of the Monthly BQJ.

At this time of year I like to incorporate some Christmas carols from old hymnals, too.

I finally found some earth stickers. I probably should have used just one on this page, but I had to cover up a handwriting mistake so I just went along with it!

What hymns inspire you during this season? They'd be a great way to finish up the last pages of your Monthly BQ journal for this year!

Amazing Grace

As I have been writing out the 31 Days of Grace verses onto my flip cards, that song "Amazing Grace" has been running through my mind. I took advantage of a rainy afternoon to #biblequilt a page on it.

I pulled out one of the Music Trio templates for a quick jumpstart on a music backdrop. I used one formatted for a 7 x 10 journal, but attached it into my 8.5 x 11 Monthly BQJ so I'd have extra space in the margin to add verses.

Since we sang "Amazing Grace" at church a couple weeks ago, I had the lyrics already in printed form from a bulletin. I cut the stanzas apart and brushed the edges lightly with an ink pad to give them a little color, adding contrast against the white page.

I searched for some verses on a few of the key phrases, stitching them around…

Rugged & Redeemed: Hymns for Him

- - - Good Friday tends to have us reflecting on the cross more than usual.

This morning while I was walking my dog, enjoying all the blossoms of spring, the hymn "the Old Rugged Cross" kept coming to mind.

Back at home I searched through my Mom's old hymnals and found a copy of the song to use for a BQ page. Reading through the lyrics again, I focused in on the phrase "dear Lamb of God" and chose a verse with this phrase included, which also happens to be one of our 31 Days of Redemption passages!

I pulled out the cross stamp I found recently on clearance at Hobby Lobby and the page developed pretty quickly from there. The simplicity was just what my spirit needed.

This page doesn't have many verses, but the process really impacted me on this holy day of remembrance of all Jesus…

JOY to the World

How is YOUR joy-seeking going this season?

Sometimes creating a simple BQJ page helps me remember the long-lasting, historic JOY that generations upon generations have experienced before us.

Looking into the background history of favorite Christmas carols puts them in context. Adding scripture around a hymnal page allows me to see the connections between Bible verses and beloved lyrical phrases.

I love the hymns!

O Holy Night

Do you sometimes catch yourself humming a refrain from a Christmas carol?

The phrase "the weary world rejoices" kept swirling about in my head last week, so I decided to spend some time creating with it and digging into the rest of the song, too.

I used the Bells template printed in the December section of my Monthly Bible Quilt journal, coloring in the design first as I contemplated how I was going to break up the stanzas into the quilt squares.

Initially I shaded in the bells with silver, but it was too muted so I did a little swirl using a glitter pen.

Using old HYMNS in your Bible Quilt

Old hymnals are a great resource for Bible Quilting! Often as we are creating with scripture, we're reminded of a worship song or hymn. Adding some stanzas of favorite hymns are a fun way to add some texture into your Bible Quilt journal.

Chances are you have an old hymnal available through a family member or perhaps your church that has some "retired" ones.

I have several old hymnals from my Mom's stash of piano music. Some of them are falling apart anyway and have a comfortable worn edge that is a touching reminder of how much they've been loved.

The old fonts are nostalgic, too!

Simply tear out a page and adapt the size to fit your journal.
