Keeping your supplies handy

Edited: Oct 13

We are all on the move, carpooling kiddos around and running errands. Sometimes when I've got a gap in between activities, I'll snag a few minutes to add a couple verses to my #biblequiltjournal.

I keep this tote bag stocked with basic supplies: Bible, my current Bible Quilt journal, washi tape (a larger binder ring keeps it secure on the handle), Papermate flair pens tucked in on one side and colored pencils on the other side. I keep a pair of scissors and a post-it notepad in the end pockets.

Depending on where I'm at and how much time I have, I might be creative with writing verses on a page or I might add some doodling to pages-in-progress. Sometimes I'm surrounded by too many distractions and I'll just add swatches of washi tape throughout the journal.

If it's been a really hectic day, I'll just pull out my Bible and read or maybe reflect on a certain page in my Bible Quilt.

I usually have time during a lull to find a verse or two for the letter-of-the-week in my ABCbiblequiltjournal or at least can brainstorm some words/phrases to add the references onto my ABC flip card set.

Having my supply tote available in my car makes these little snippets of time more scripture-focused than scrolling through social media.

Each time we glance over verses in our journals, it sinks in a little deeper...and we may even discover we're memorizing verses or at least becoming more familiar with where to find our favorites.

  • I love learning tips from enthusiastic girls when they come for a Bible Quilting session! Here's a short video showing how my young friend uses watercolor pencils in her Bible Quilt: She makes it look so easy, doesn't she? I think I even have a set of watercolor pencils, but haven't used them this way! The baby wipe provides just enough moisture to activate smudging without being too much to bleed through the paper. If you're decorating a template, it will provide an additional layer of paper to protect the backside of the page...or you can use this technique on the template and let it dry completely before attaching to your journal page. #watercolorpencils #smudgingtechnique #coloringinmybiblequiltjournal #BQtips #biblequiltjournal #tipsandtricks If you've tried this watercolor smudging technique, please share a sample in the Comments section below!

  • As we're scrolling through updates on our family and friends, we can harvest some scripture along the way...and maybe follow a productive path while we're getting sidetracked! It doesn't have to be a huge ordeal. We can simply encounter a scripture that's posted and decide to do something with it. We can pause and let the scripture message sink in. We can forward it to someone that could benefit from it. We can look up the surrounding verses to see it in a fuller context. We can add it to a Bible Quilt page! This is often how I get ideas for my #ABCbiblequiltjournal. The main word/phrase awakens my heart and I want to capture the impact. If I'm at home, I'll add it directly onto a page. When I have the opportunity to do this, I feel more grounded as I move on to the other activities of my day. I'm amazed how a few minutes in the Word clarifies my perspective! If I don't have my BQ supplies with me, I'll screenshot it so I'll have it later. Sometimes I'll simply add the reference to my ABC flip card set for the next time I'm working on that particular letter. How do you make the most of social media?
