The other day a friend forwarded a quote from C.H. Spurgeon. It was stylized with pretty graphics, so I decided to print it out on photo paper to use on a blank page in my Monthly Bible Quilt®Journal. I brushed the white page with some distress ink to match the look of the printed photo background. Next I put a book-ish washi tape border on the bottom of the page to help anchor the large photo. Then I selected some verses about the Word, writing them around the quote, stitched some dividing lines between the scriptures and adding a few stickers to illustrate concepts. I had this cute printable about home hanging out in my digital files for a while and this month I was inspired to print it out to use it on one of my blank BQ pages. I chose to print it on photo paper for the glossy finish, then used some bold floral stickers to help balance out the page. I cut around the heart to make a stencil. I chose a photo from a wedding shower we had way back when! I held the paper cutout against the photo in front of a window so I could see through the silhouette to center the photo. Once I had the photo cut out, I glued it onto the template page. I began adding embellishments, considering what verses I'd like to include. Sometimes I've explained Bible Quilting as "scripture scrapbooking" because it uses a lot of the same materials. It provides me with a place to tuck in some sentimental pieces of memorabilia with scriptures that are resonating with me. Recently as I sorted through some birthday cards, I decided to incorporate one onto a blank page in my Monthly Bible Quilt Journal.(https://www.biblequiltjournal.com/post/prepping-your-2024-monthly-bible-quilt-journal) I secured it onto the page and reinforced it with washi tape, then used the same washi tape to make a bold border around the perimeter of the page. I added a photo, jotted down a prayer and some of my devotional goals for the year, then added some scriptures to the other side. Scrapbookers... have any decorative paper you're not quite sure how to incorporate photos onto? I had this 12 x 12 card stock with a glittery Adore in the lower corner and just didn't know what to do with it. The other day I decided I could trim it down to fit my Monthly BQJ to make a simple Christmas-y page. I pulled out some large alpha stickesr and added some glittery stars to balance out the "Adore" side. Right now I'm enjoying the simplicity of this page, but may add a reference tag and a title tab. A while back while decluttering some of my scrapbook materials, I uncovered a booklet that had all kinds of decorative tabs in it. I cut out the letters to spell Noel as a title and tucked them into my 2023 Monthly BQJ.(https://www.biblequiltjournal.com/post/building-on-a-firm-foundation-2023-monthly-bible-quilt-journal) Last week I rediscovered them and began working on this page. The cute little nativity stickers are from a set I found at Hobby Lobby. (It's probably a Paper Studios pack.) I drew around thee stickers to provide some grounding and sketched out an amateurish stable. I stitched in verses from Luke chapter 2, leaving the remainder of the background open. I may go back and add some blue shading in the background...or I may not. Sometimes I let these decisions percolate a bit. How are you filling up your blank pages in the Monthly BQJ this month? This is such a cozy template (https://www.biblequiltjournal.com/product-page/home-in-winter)that our Bible Quilting friend, Janice from West Virginia, designed for us to use during this cold season! I tried something new: white puffy paint to add some snowy texture tip: I'd suggest doing it as the very last step so you're not rubbing against the tackiness of the dried glue. I colored in some of the elements, began writing verses in the quilt squares, then decided to use some snowflake washi tape for the background color. I wrote a combination of verses from our Home & Family series along with some Christmas scriptures. I finished off the page with some seasonal holly and snowflake stickers... and added another layer of puffy paint snow just for fun! Our Bibles get a lot of activity as we're flipping through them. I like to reinforce the edge of the first page of each book of the Bible. This makes it easier to find each book and adds a cute layer of reinforcement, especially if you plan on adding Bible tabs later. I'm still "moving in" to my Bible that I'm using this year to read through the Bible.(https://www.biblequiltjournal.com/post/daily-bible-reading-in-2023) I've gradually been adding washi tape as I go. I was delighted to discover a pineapple washi tape in my stash, so I added it and colored in the pineapples on the page to get my creative juices flowing. 😉 What's with all the pineapples??? Pineapples are a symbol of welcome. At one time they were the "must have" centerpiece for extravagant banquets. Their image was incorporated into arrchitectural features on pillars, church entrances, etc. We even have a light fixture over our kitchen table that has a pineapple-ish globe. These regal fruits have found their way into culture in a variety of ways, gradually becoming an emblem of southern hospitality. (Google it...a fascinating history!) My sweet Bible Quilting friend in Minnesota sent me a knitted pineapple scrubby. It looks too cute to get all dirty, Glenda, but I may add it to my kitchen sink as a WELCOME to have my guys wash dishes! As I was putting away some scrapbook paper the other day I noticed I had a sheet full of pineapples. I trimmed it to fit my journal and glued it in as a background for my next page. This was a great grounding activity last night as a full, busy week awaits. It was a good time to pray about all those coming in and out of our house, preparing my heart to extend the gentle warmth of Christian hospitality amidst the chaos often mixed into preparations. Most of us have a welcome mat (https://www.biblequiltjournal.com/product-page/welcome-mat)at the entrance of our front doors. We scuff our shoes on it as we shuffle into one another's homes, crossing the threshold into another's space. Often we also have potted plants or seasonal decor, like some friendly pumpkins,(https://www.biblequiltjournal.com/post/pumpkin-power) to create a cheerful ambiance. I decided to sketch out a house behind the elements on the welcome mat template. I added some verses, stitching them in around the house. I may fill in the background later....still waiting to figure that out. I used alpha stickers and few florals to provided some textured color in the window boxes. Back-to-school season is often a whirlwind of gathering up school supplies, meeting teachers, and adjusting to new activity schedules. It's also a great time to pray over students and their school environment. I started my page by coloring the elements and adding some book-ish washi tape. Then I added scriptures and some school-related ephemera.
